Zara UK customers offered an in-house exchange, repair and donation service

MADRID, Oct 21 (Reuters) – Zara announced on Friday the launch of an in-house service allowing British customers to sell, repair or donate second-hand clothes, putting the Spanish brand in a growing share of the market.

The platform, which will be launched on November 3, will be available in Zara stores, its website and a mobile application.

This is the first time that Inditex (ITX.MC), the fashion group that owns Zara, has offered a resale service for its products. The company said the initiative would help reduce waste and raw material consumption, without specifying whether it would expand the service to other markets.

The Zara Pre-Owned platform brings the success of pre-owned Zara clothing sales internally to other online platforms and to shoppers on social media such as Instagram.

The resale space will be organized by product categories, with detailed information for each item, including current images provided by the seller and original product information provided by Zara, the company said.

Zara is following other fast fashion brands such as its main competitor H&M (HMb.ST) in offering products for resale at a time when the global market for second-hand clothes is growing.

The global second-hand clothing market is estimated to be worth $71.2 billion in 2022, according to a Future Market Insights report published in September.

Future Market Insights expects the market to grow 14.8% per year over the next decade as people appreciate the environmental benefits of using second-hand clothing.

Zara already offers its customers the opportunity to donate their clothes to charity in several markets.

Zara customers in Britain will also have the option of repairing their clothes whatever the season, either in-store or by applying online.

Inditex has 100 stores in Britain, including 60 Zara stores.
