“She doesn’t ask, but she just tells me that I’m going to this place, or that I will be ninang (godmother), or that I will be the first lady of the PRRD (president Rodrigo R. Duterte). She doesn’t ask what color or what design. I love the idea of her giving me the freedom to do what I love to do for her,” he said.

Anglacer, who made Duterte’s ethnic-inspired dresses and barong blouses, said every piece she makes for Duterte is “really special”, paying close attention to how she will feel in the comfortable when she puts the dress on.

He said he made sure every design had “details controlled”.

Considering his position as mayor, he said “you can’t put more than enough for Sara because she wouldn’t wear it if she looked funny”.

“It’s classic because I work on given variables, especially for the mayor. I would consider his position and his career. When I imagine coming up with a dress for her, it’s more her personality. It’s more about the person. I work on classic cuts and basics, and the specific type of materials that really suit the structure of Mayor Inday,” he said.

For Duterte’s inauguration on Sunday, Anglacer said he prepared a basic emerald-green Filipino dress that took him about two weeks to make, from seam to cut.

“I’ve been with the mayor the longest, so it’s easy for me to come up with a design for any theme or design of the dress she’s going to wear. I have a special fabric for the mayor. I know what kind of fabric and what details will go with it,” he added.

He said his latest creation for Duterte is “like a flowing dress” with terno sleeves made from a very soft fabric.

“I love dressing her because she takes such good care of all my pieces. Kung ano feel nya na damit (whatever design she likes), over time you develop it. You will be inspired to do more for her because you already know she would look really good,” he said.

Anglacer will also dress Duterte’s family, including mayor-elect Sebastian Duterte’s daughter, the vice president-elect’s children, her husband, lawyer Mans Carpio, and her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman. (Antonio L. Colina IV/MindaNews)
