Samantha Morton on Her Exceptional Year and Deliciously Twisted Turn in ‘The Serpent Queen’
One of the most interesting things about Catherine for me was how, as a woman, she was forced to take power simply as a means of survival. Were there any parallels to the present day that you could think of in regards to that?
Sure. I mean, we’re talking about the 1530s, where Catherine or any other bride was only good at – excuse my language – how fuckable they were, or their ability to produce babies quickly. It’s heartbreaking, and this kind of commodification of women still exists today. I’m proud that it’s an American company making this show, when you think about everything that’s going on in the United States right now with Roe vs. Wade. It’s just remarkable that Catherine really has no rights over her body. It’s a story of freedom, and it’s a story of survival.
You’re having a pretty amazing year, between that, She says, and The whale. The latter premiered in Venice yesterday – did you follow the response?
I did a show called The hot girls here in the UK and also doing press for The Serpent Queen– and I also just finished an album with Richard Russell, so we’re in the process of polishing it and mastering it. Richard is just amazing. I wrote a movie, I’m trying to get funding for my next feature – I’ve been really super busy, which is amazing of course.
Suffice it to say, The whale received excellent reviews.
Alright, that’s fine. Brendan [Fraser] was absolutely amazing to work with. It was a really special movie to make. I loved working with Darren [Aronofsky]and Sadie [Sink] was amazing too, so hopefully it’s going well. Likewise with She says. I was very honored to have been asked to play Zelda Perkins, as I’m a huge fan of her work. They’re usually a really good caliber of people to give their time to, so I feel really thrilled.
I didn’t know you made music. What can you tell me about this?
It’s a new part of my life, and it’s very exciting. I can really only give you kind of a teaser, but I’d love to tell you about it when we release it. It wasn’t planned and it kind of happened and now we’re a band, but it changed my life – really one of the best things that’s happened to me in my life. I’m super excited to share our music with the world when that happens. This shouldn’t take too long!
