Each June we look forward to the BET Awards as well as the tradition of tweeting Black Twitter as a family and more than likely entertaining the show itself. But what’s more important than who is present is what our favorite celebrities are wearing. One in particular was nothing short of stunning, with an impeccable voice to match: Jazmine Sullivan.
The R&B singer sported a vibrant yet refined look as she graced the red carpet with straight, shiny hair styled by acclaimed hairstylist Dhairius Thomas and wearing a fuchsia Gucci pleated dress paired with Alexandre Vauthier heeled sandals. She also showcased Lagos and vintage jewelry to enhance her whimsical appearance.
“I wanted her to be both beautiful and elegant,” says stylist Joiee Thorpe. “I was inspired by a bold color because I feel like it always has black on the carpet. When she tried on this dress, it was her! I worked closely with the glam team to achieve a very chic and effortless look.

However, Sullivan massacre did not end on the mat but continued her buzzing performance on stage. Winner of the “Album of the Year” for her project Tales of Heaux wowed audiences and viewers with a bespoke puff sleeve jumpsuit by Bao Tranchi as she sang two tracks – “Tragic” and “On It” – alongside Ari Lennox, who also wore Bao Tranchi.
“We knew we wanted a wetsuit and wanted a specific fit to grab Jazmine all around,” Thorpe explains. “When we picked designer Bao Tranchi, who designed key looks for J. Lo, Britney Spears to name a few, I was so excited. Bao transformed one of his classic dress styles into a catsuit and took the dramatic sleeve to another level. Jazmine’s music is so beautiful and I wanted the combination to reflect that.
Sullivan has been just plain booked and busy lately, going from a stunning performance for the 2021 Super Bowl halftime show to the top of the year to headlining the 2021 ESSENCE Culture Festival. She transcended ESSENCE coverage for our July / August 2021 issue, being very candid when interviewed by Precarious creator Issa Rae. In addition to being an album of the year winner, she also got her No. 1 debut album with “Pick Up Your Feelings” on R&B Radio. For more of Jazmine Sullivan, you can see her perform for the Day N Vegas Festival on November 13.
