DSS reveals type of clothes Nnamdi Kanu will not be allowed to wear in detention, gives reason

FCT, Abuja- The Department of State Services (DSS) said it could not allow Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to wear clothing with a lion head badge.

The security agency said on Wednesday February 16 during the resumption of Kanu’s trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Prime time reported.

Legit.ng Kanu’s lead attorney, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), drew Trial Judge Binta Nyako’s attention to difficulties in trying to get Kanu new clothes at the agency’s detention facility in Abuja.

Recall that the judge had ordered the DSS to allow Kanu to change his clothes from the usual Fendi jumpsuit he wore in court.

However, the head of the IPOB still appeared in the same clothes after the judge’s order.

Defending the DSS, Shuaibu Labaran, a lawyer representing the federal government, told the court on the last adjourned date that Kanu insists on wearing the same outfit in court because it is designer.

When the proceedings resumed on Wednesday, the judge asked the director of legal services of the DSS, to provide an explanation on the question.

In response, the DSS Director of Legal Services whose name could not be determined said:

“My Lord, the clothes that were brought for the accused had a lion’s head on it, and the accused (Mr. Kanu) cannot wear lion-headed clothes.”

The Secret Service attorney also explained that the “lion head garments violate standard operating procedures” of the DSS.

Kanu insists on wearing an ethnic outfit with a lion head badge

Speaking in court, Kanu insisted on wearing the Igbo ethnic dress which bears a lion head insignia, a typical dress worn by IPOB members in the south east.

The cable quoted the head of IPOB as saying:

“I want to wear the fabric of my people which is Isi Agu.”

However, the judge also reportedly said that Kano could not wear the garment.

Judge Nyako said she would allow Kanu to wear plain clothes or keep his current attire if he so chooses.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the DSS said Kanu was being properly taken care of in his custody.

Hamza Pandogari, an agency official, said so in a counter affidavit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He said Kanu was receiving adequate and quality medical care if needed.
