Bliss Bridal Boutique opens in downtown Midland

A local couple with five daughters opened a bridal shop in downtown Midland. Tamara and John Schmidt introduced the public to Bliss Bridal Boutique, Midland’s newest specialty bridal boutique, during their grand opening October 7-9.

The Schmidts, of Midland, have two other established businesses and felt the time had come to start a new, fully independent business, an idea the family has been kicking around for some time.

“My husband, John, talked about it,” Tamara Schmidt said. “We have five daughters and do a lot of shopping, a lot of dress shopping. Last February, the family sat down to discuss it, and we all agreed to do so.

The family business is located in the former Losey’s Fine Jewelers building at 133 E. Main Street, next to Little Forks Outfitters.

“Lots of former Losey clients came to our grand opening celebration with their wedding rings,” Schmidt said. “It was nice to hear some of their stories. Things are going well so far. “

The Schmidt girls, aged 14 to 22, have always been involved in family businesses. They aren’t afraid to run the equipment or get their hands dirty and that’s exactly what they did as they immediately took the plunge (along with the Schmidts’ seven nieces) to help with the renovation in depth of the building.

“All of my daughters have helped,” Tamara Schmidt said. “They sanded and built walls, laid tiles and stained the floors on their hands and knees. “My husband made the copper shelving that you see in the store. My father came to give me a hand. The girls helped choose all the dresses. Everyone got involved. “

The grand opening celebration included a cake cutting ceremony offered by Belle’s Bakery. Other small businesses, such as Peel N ‘Pare and Coley’s Sweet Treats, also donated items.

“The event went very well,” said Josie Lake, a niece who is also the manager of Bliss Bridal Boutique. “We have had so much encouragement and support from local businesses. They were so nice.

“We had a blast,” Tamara Schmidt said. “We really love being in downtown Midland. “There is so much going on. After work, we can eat pizza and listen to music. We have always involved our children in our businesses. It now seems to suit our family. . “

Bridal Bliss Boutique has a nice selection of wedding dresses, accessories, bridesmaid dresses, tuxedo rentals, and gifts. The store offers brands such as Couture, Thomberg and Allures which offer a range of models and styles, from traditional to modern and fashionable.

“I love weddings these days,” Schmidt said. “They are so unique for the couple. The colors have changed. Ivory on ivory is still popular, as are ivory and sand. But you even start to see black wedding dresses. We have one that is bluish gray. There is also a wide range of prices and styles.

The desire of brides to push conventional boundaries suits Bliss Bridal as they personalize dresses a lot. A custom of the wedding day – that it is first and foremost the day of the bride – has not wavered. Still, Bliss Bridal Boutique offers formal wear for men to buy and rent, as well as clothing, accessories, and gifts for the entire wedding party.

Tamara Schmidt and Lake run the day-to-day operations. Schmidt’s daughter Hannah, 18, works afternoons after school, an arrangement that “so far has worked pretty well. It may still be the honeymoon phase, ”said Tamara Schmidt with a smile.

Blood is flowing at Bliss Bridal Boutique.

“I can’t imagine doing this without my niece,” Tamara Schmidt said. “John and I have flipped the houses and like to keep the family involved. We love home improvement projects. We look at a building and imagine what it might look like. I felt there was a need for a bridal boutique in Midland. I know when I was looking for a formal dress for a convention or other event, there weren’t many places around that offered it. We have looked at the world of the bride and we really love it. I called him and got the keys.
